LANGKAWI: Four pilots from two KT-1B aircraft of Indonesia's Jupiter
aerobatics team, which crashed about 2pm today when they grazed each
other during practice for the Langkawi International Maritime and
Aerospace 2015 exhibition, are safe but with varying injuries.
They have been sent to hospital for treatment and possible observation.
One of the aircraft crashed outside the perimeter of the Langkawi International Airport but the other crashed near Kampung Gelam, which lies just outside the airport.
Combat Search and Rescue helicopters of the Royal Malaysian Air Force were despatched to locate the pilots. Airport emergency tenders and Fire and Rescue Department engines were sent to fight the fires.
Two kampung houses were set alight by the KT-1B which crashed outside the airport. No casualties were reported apart from a villager having fainted, apparently from fright.
The two aircraft were part of a formation of six which had broken away to perform a pass of each other from opposite directions in front of the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre when the incident occurred.
All practice flights for aircraft on aerial displays were stopped as combat search and rescue helicopters deployed to find the pilots.
